Sponsor Sweetie Program

On May 6, 2009, the Calvert County Animal Control Department contacted us regarding a female pit bull that was found abandoned. As Animal Control Officer Fred Sheckells lifted her into the van, she gently kissed his hand. He knew at that moment that this dog needed and deserved help desperately!

We swung into action, and had her in our loving arms that afternoon! When we saw her, we were shocked to say the least. She was named "Sweetie" by the staff where she is being fostered because, well, she's just incredibly sweet. Upon meeting you, Sweetie will gently approach you and proceed to kiss your hand, your cheek, whatever you will allow. No matter what abuse and neglect she suffered at the hands of the human race, she shows nothing but love to those she meets.

To say Sweetie was neglected is an understatement. It is estimated that she was starved for a period of four to five months. Upon examination at the vet's office, it was determined she had no more than a day or two to live. In addition to being emaciated, she has numerous cuts all over her body and a severe skin infection. This is something we do not see all the time, but when we do, our mission to protect and save is more evident than ever.

Currently Sweetie is being nursed back to health. She will receive a highly nutritious diet, plenty of water, much needed medicine and tons of love and tenderness. We believe that with six months of care, she will be ready to be adopted out to the public.

Everyone asks, "How?" "Why?" We don't have the answer to those questions, but we do have a possible solution. Educate everyone in America about basic animal welfare! Teach our young people to have empathy and compassion for others. Those who already know right from wrong, please stand up and be a force for change. Lobby for better laws to protect animals! Get involved! Speak up! Volunteer--we need you! Report abuse or neglect when you see it! Be a role model for proper animal guardianship!

We are offering our "Sponsor Sweetie" program for those who would like to contribute not only to Sweetie's medical care, but also our Education Committee which focuses on public education on issues such as animal abuse and cruelty.

If you would like to make a financial donation, please mail your check to HSCC, PO Box 3505, Prince Frederick MD 20678. Be sure to indicate "Sponsor Sweetie Program" on your check. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and your donation is tax deductible.

From all of us who work tirelessly to protect animals from abuse such as this, thank you!
