Our "Diamond in the Ruff" program designates our dogs that have at least one issue that has made it difficult for them to find their forever home. Nina was adopted out by us when she was a puppy and after many years was given up by her owner. Why? Because she can sail over six foot fences if left unattended for long periods of time and was picked up by Animal Control several times accumulating fines that the owner got tired of paying. She was left outside in a fenced yard each day and she would leave, particularly if it rains, because she hates rain and being cold. Nina doesn’t show well. Because she is a long term resident, her stress level at the shelter has risen. If you were to walk by her kennel run you would quickly pass her by because her barking and the displaying of her teeth can be scary. But that’s her intent. You see, Nina is fearful of new people, and I‘m stressing new. Nina’s mother was a Belgium Malinois, they are determined and observant with strong protective and territorial instincts, which brings us to the hurdle in finding Nina the perfect home. Nina can be very protective and adding into that her fear of new people, her first reaction is to bite. We’re unable to take her to adoption events because she’s a nervous Nellie as there are scary new people who want to meet her. With her being fearful, she’s just plain out of luck meeting a potential adopter and that’s just plain sad. You’re probably asking yourself “why would I want to adopt this dog?” Here’s why. When Nina is sprung from shelter life, you will have the privilege of rescuing an overlooked wonderful companion. You will enjoy the over the top greeting she’ll give you when you walk in the door. Whatever size lap you have Nina will be able to fit into it with a tennis ball hanging out of her mouth and at the same time you can rub her ears which will almost send her to nap time. She loves taking walks, playing with other dogs and most of all being with her people. What you give to Nina she will give back ten times over. If needed, HSCC will assist financially should you need a professional trainer to help Nina settle into her new home. The downside to giving Nina a home is that it will be your responsibility to properly introduce Nina to new people and not leave her unattended in a fenced yard and if you don’t have a fenced yard, a daily regimen of taking her for long walks. When you think about it, that’s not too much to ask considering what you’ll get in return. She seems to be all right with cats. We call her “Our Diamond in the Ruff Dog” and when all polished up, Nina is a real gem. Our hearts ache for Nina because we know that there is someone out there that needs to be rescued as much as she does. Is that person you?
