National Dog Bite Prevention Week
When: Tuesday, May 18, 2010
Where:
Please take a few moments during the week of May 16th-22nd to learn about the safety precautions you and your children should take to avoid having a bite incident. It is important that you teach your children on how to approach all dogs, even your own. Never leave a child unattended with a any animal, do not let them approach a chained dog, or let them be near animals while they are eating treats or food. Taking a few moments to educate can save your family and animals from the trauma of having a bite incident. For more information, please cut and past this link: http://www.avma.org/animal_health/brochures/dog_bite/dog_bite_brochure.pdf This link will take you to the Humane Society of the United States: http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/dog_care/stay_dog_bite_free/preventing_dog_bites.html How to avoid being bitten: Don't run past a dog. The dog's natural instinct is to chase and catch prey. If a dog threatens you, don't scream. Avoid eye contact. Try to remain motionless until the dog leaves, then back away slowly until the dog is out of sight. Don't approach a strange dog, especially one that's tethered or confined. While letter carriers are discouraged from petting animals, people who choose to pet dogs should always let a dog see and sniff them before petting the animal. How to be a responsible dog owner: Obedience training can teach dogs proper behavior and help owners control their dog in any situation. When the letter carrier comes to your home, keep your dog inside, away from the door, in another room, or on a leash. Don't let your child take mail from the letter carrier in the presence of your dog. Your dog's instinct is to protect the family. Spay or neuter your dog. Neutered dogs are less likely to bite. HSUS statistics reflect that dogs that have not been spayed or neutered are up to three times more likely to be involved in a biting incident than neutered or spayed dogs. Dogs that haven't been properly socialized, receive little attention or handling, or are left tied up for long periods of time frequently turn into biters.

Sponsor-a-Kennel Run Program
When: Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at 05:00AM
Where: Fishing Creek Kennel
The Humane Society of Calvert County is proud to announce that our new fencing has been installed! This fencing will provide a much safer environment for the animals in our care and not to mention our staff and volunteers. It has been a LONG time coming, and we are very excited that it is finally complete! This was a very large expense for the Humane Society, but it was one that became a priority very quickly as you can tell by one of the photos on the attached form. Because of this, we are launching a mass fundraiser in order to raise $30,000 to cover the cost of the kennel fencing. I have no doubt that we can accomplish this with our strong volunteer base and support system in the community. I have attached the 'Sponsor-a-Kennel' flyer/form for you to view. Please consider making a monetary donation of any amount if you are not able to sponsor-a-kennel. Every penny counts! Thank you for your continuous support, because of people like you we are still able to continue to operate! Please do not hesitate to visit our shelter to see for yourself the difference the new fencing has made to our shelter. HSCC is proud to be a 'No-Kill' animal shelter, and rescues nearly 300 dogs and 150 cats a year! Thank you!

Adopt a Senior Pet Month
When: Tuesday, November 30, 2010
Where: Humane Society and Tri-County Animal Shelter
All month long we are celebrating our senior animals. We always have great senior animals that need a loving home. As you can see, by our Senior Mascot Ray, he is enjoying his forever home. Ray was a former senior chained dog, he is now living a great dogs life. If we do not have that senior animal that you are looking for, we encourage you to visit Tri-County Animal Shelter. They too have many loving, healthy seniors available for adoption. During the month of November, the adoption fee for senior pets at Tri-COunty Animal Shelter are reduced to $45. "Senior" pets or "mature" as we prefer to call them, are animals that are five (5) years or older. But don't let the age fool you-mature pets have many years ahead of them to give and get love. They already have their manners, meaning they usually are housebroken, calmer and less destructive than their younger counterparts, and may already know some tricks that they can share with their new owners. You'll already know how big they will get and what they will look like, which you can't guarantee with a puppy or kitten. Sometimes people believe that adult animals must be at the shelter because they are "bad" animals, and in most cases this is not true. Pets are relinquished for many reasons including owners are moving, allergies, deployment, foreclosure, eviction, or the owners have died. These pets are just looking for someone to love and care for them. If you have room in your home and in your heart for a mature pet who's looking for a second chance, and you would like to take advantage of the reduced adoption fee, visit the Tri-County Animal Shelter during the month of November for your new best friend. The Tri-County Animal Shelter is located at 6707 Animal Shelter Road, Hughesville, MD. 20637. Adoption hours are M-F 12pm-5pm and Saturday 10am-3pm. The shelter is closed on Sunday and all Charles County Government holidays.
